The July 1st Saturna Island Lamb BBQ is cancelled for the 2nd year in a row.  But this doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate; read on to see what we have planned:

How to celebrate July 1st Saturna Style during a pandemic:

Update on Exciting July 1 Celebrations on Saturna

Even though our traditional July 1 lamb barbeque will not take place in 2021 (Covid-19 strikes again), we are still going to celebrate Canada Day on Saturna; it will just look a little different.  We have four initiatives planned:

  • an online silent auction culminating on July 1,
  • an online Saturna Lamb BBQ store
  • a “do-it-yourself” lamb creation effort by local children and young people, and
  • a community-based drive-through, take-out roast lamb dinner on July 1.

You won’t want to miss the Saturna Lamb BBQ online silent auction and neither will your family, friends and acquaintances.  It is a new undertaking on Saturna and is the major Lamb BBQ fundraiser for 2021.  We have received generous donations of an eclectic and very interesting selection of goods, services and educational opportunities to auction.  Come back to this website on June 17 to find the link to the auction site. The auction will continue until July 1/21.

The online store can also be accessed through this website.  Watch for the limited edition 2021 Lamb BBQ t-shirt and other “swag” (“stuff we all get”) items in early June.

We are engaging with the children and young people on Saturna by inviting and assisting them to create a lamb of any size, using whatever material/medium they fancy.  Watch for their efforts posted to this website.

Finally, unless Provincial gathering restrictions are tightened up dramatically before July 1, 2021, we are planning a community-based drive thru, lamb picnic dinner on Canada Day for ticket holders only, in the Recreation Centre parking lot.  Ticket-holders will stay in their vehicles and will be assigned pick-up times to ensure the safety of volunteers and participants and to help manage the traffic flow.  A limited number of tickets will be available – about 275 – and they must be purchased in advance.  The tickets are priced at $20 and will be sold only on Saturna – most likely by volunteers stationed outside the Recycling Centre or the General Store – starting in early June.  Purchasers will be encouraged to pick up dinners for a group of family or friends to reduce traffic, and to then drive home or to their favourite picnic site.

Stayed tuned to this website for more details on all these endeavors.

About the BBQ

The Lamb Barbeque is a joyous celebration of Canada Day, centred around a traditionally prepared barbequed lamb meal, with an old-fashioned country fair flavour.

Our community has hosted the Saturna Lamb Barbeque since July 1st 1950 when it began as a school picnic on the Campbell’s farm at Saturna Beach.
